Alex wrote and illustrated her first short story at the age of eight. A cartoonist throughout middle school, she wrote and illustrated young adult short stories featuring four teenage girls she called Witness Youth, inspired by the dramatic teachings of Jehovah's Witnesses. She also spent her earliest years pouring over family medical books and continues a lifelong interest in health and healing.

Later, Alex received a B.A. in Rhetoric from The University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. There, she and her husband published the zine Headsplitter, featuring interviews and music reviews of indie bands. Her review of The Dreamwheel Circus by The Suede Chain had also been published in the local Urbana newspaper The Octopus. Meanwhile, she began studying Animal Sciences. She kept and bred numerous beautiful corn snakes who tried to teach her the meaning of life and raised a chicken in in her townhouse basement. December 2000, she won first prize in Salon.com's celebrity dream contest with the entry www.salon.com/people/feature/2000/12/05/celeb_dreams1/index.html

Over the years, Alex has worn many hats while also studying Eastern philosophies and alternative health. She has studied at Chicago's Second City Theater where she often played news anchors, authors, and spiritual gurus. She is also a certified yoga instructor with interests ranging from politics, singing, and wine. She resides in Manhattan with her husband and two cats.
